On the occasion of his site-specific contribution to the game changing exhibition The Sun Machine Is Coming Down, currently taking place at the ICC in Berlin, in the form of a multi-variant, multi-media display of the ten glass showcases on the ground floor of the spectacular building in the style of 70s Futurism, which has been lying dormant for years, we are presenting BACKSTAGE with the previously unseen computer-based painting Transformation I by Markus Selg from 2017.
Selg is one of the pioneers of digital art, not only in Germany. Since the late nineties, the Berlin-based artist has been using the possibilities of the computer to create paintings, sculptures, installations, films and theatre plays that are able to reconcile the material with the virtual by resolving their supposed discrepancy within themselves.
In Transformation I, which also graces the cover of the current issue of the London-based culture magazine Picpus, Selg makes the butterfly, since time immemorial the symbol of both the capacity for transformation and the process of metamorphosis, a painterly element, the structuring pattern of an abstract composition. The figurative and the non-figurative merge into a décor reminiscent of Matisse, full of colourful splendour and rhythmic elegance, only in 2.0.
BACKSTAGE is a new format launched at the beginning of this year, within which Galerie Guido W. Baudach regularly highlights special individual works and series by one or thematically selected works by various artists, independently of the regular exhibition program and both physically in the showroom and virtually online on the gallery's website.
Aus Anlass seines ortsspezifischen Beitrags zur derzeit im Berliner ICC stattfindenden Ausstellung The Sun Machine Is Coming Down in Form einer variantenreichen, multi-medialen Bespielung der zehn Glasvitrinen im Erdgeschoß des spektakulären, seit Jahren ungenutzt vor sich hin schlummernden Bauwerks im Stile des 70er Jahre Futurismus präsentieren wir BACKSTAGE die bislang ungezeigte, computer-basierte Malerei Transformation I von Markus Selg aus dem Jahr 2017.
Selg zählt zu den Pionieren der digitalen Kunst, nicht nur in Deutschland. Seit den späten Neunziger Jahren nutzt der in Berlin ansässige Künstler die Möglichkeiten des Computers, um Bilder, Skulpturen, Installationen, Filme und Theaterstücke zu schaffen, die in der Lage sind, das Materiellen mit dem Virtuellen zu versöhnen, indem sie deren vermeintliche Diskrepanz in sich selbst auflösen.
In Transformation I, das auch die Titelseite der aktuellen Ausgabe des in London erscheinenden Kulturmagazins Picpus ziert, macht Selg den Schmetterling, seit alters her das Sinnbild für sowohl die Fähigkeit zur Verwandlung als auch den Prozess der Metamorphose, zu einem malerischen Element, zum strukturierenden Pattern einer abstrakten Komposition. Gegenständliches und Ungegenständliches verschmelzen zu einem an Matisse erinnernden Dekor voll Farbenpracht und rhythmischer Eleganz, nur eben in 2.0.
BACKSTAGE ist ein neues Format, mit dem die Galerie Guido W. Baudach seit Anfang des Jahres regelmäßig besondere Einzelwerke und Serien eines oder thematisch ausgewählte Werke verschiedener Künstlerinnen und Künstler unabhängig vom regulären Ausstellungsprogramm sowohl physisch im Showroom als auch virtuell online auf der Website der Galerie präsentiert.
