Our fifth edition of BACKSTAGE is dedicated to the presentation of a new light object by Björn Dahlem.
The Potsdam-based sculptor is well known for his creations of images for cosmic phenomena and astrophysical theories. Dahlem's works, which are usually made of simple everyday materials and selected found objects, are always artistic reflections of the current state of research and are therefore based on a profound knowledge of the current status quo of the scientific discussion.
At first glance, Saturn and Beyond (2020) appears to be an unconventionally designed bedside lamp. Above a rather clunky base made of conically cut square wood and a pseudo-art nouveau stand made of chromed plastic with an octagonal bathroom mirror as a connecting piece, there is a reasonably elegant lampshade made of dark synthetic fabric with a metallic gold interior, thiat is open at the top and bottom. It is surrounded by two differently shaped rings that can be adjusted by means of a simple metal construction, of which the smaller inner ring is painted silver and the square outer ring is left in a natural wood colour.
From a less prosaic perspective, however, Saturn and Beyond then immediately and inevitably becomes a three-dimensional poetic-metaphorical image, a sculptural manifestation of the conception of the black hole conveyed by science; along with the light ring of the event horizon and the gravitational field that itself infinitely curves space-time.

BACKSTAGE is a new format launched at the beginning of this year, within which Galerie Guido W. Baudach regularly highlights special individual works and series by one or thematically selected works by various artists, independently of the regular exhibition program and both physically in the showroom and virtually online on the gallery's website.
